MERANGUE

When I was a little boy
I thought my mommy was magic.
She made me lemon meringue pie
with little golden beads that
appeared on top after it cooked
they were mysterious and pretty
but she wouldn’t let me touch
she made me a special treat
just to make me smile
a tiny pastry shell
of only baked pie dough and
butter and sugar and cinnamon
and it was just for me
just for me and no one else
80 years did not forget
her little signs of love
the things she did
that were just for me

just for me…and no one else
