GAS STATION FLOWERS

So strong is our need for love. That love is internalized and defines who we think we are. Brokenhearted feelings that cut to the core become suppressed. If you let yourself daydream, you let yourself wonder what happened to that little piece of paradise that you once knew. Clearly Zandi loves her man intensely. So much so, that her feelings of love overcome her need to love herself. She’s young and full of ideals.
I am the male version of Zandi, and I stayed waaaaay too long. Eventually, you just have to leave to save yourself. Here is my story :

I called suicide prevention
they asked how they could help
I told them I was in love with a woman
maybe not a woman, just a girl
I’m so much in love I can’t break free
though she’s bent on destroying me
tearing my heart to bits
we never make love
she likes abusing the kids.
She says her love is equal to mine
but I don’t make love to her friends
like she does to mine.
I can’t be mother and father alone
and still hold down a job
I do the best I can
for children not my own.
The things she does when I’m at work
when she thinks that she’s alone
she drinks and smokes and eats LSD
poisoning babies in the womb
she brought a murderer into our home
a junkie and his wife
a whore used to get more
heroin into their ugly life.
I thought this bad girl was “the one”
I asked her to be my wife
I think I’m losing my sanity
and now my life is done.
the Prevention folks had no clue
they seemed to me, gobstruck,
all that they could utter was
I don’t think we can help you son
hung up the phone and we were done
probably muttering, there goes
yet another lost soul, coming all undone.
