DAD

If I could turn over the same sod that my father did
to taste the berries and other things, like he grew
I will plant lettuce, tomatoes and green beans
boysenberry’s raspberries and strawberries.
As I work, I will honor him for things he could do .
Were it not for him, I would not be talking to you.
He wore out shovels to keep our family fed.
We never ate poorly and Dad made sure
with every meal he gave thanks to the Lord-
Bless this food and bless he who gave it.
Oh God how I miss that wonderful man.
I never knew I would miss him so.
But now looking back, I thank God
that I am so lucky to be a son of him.
If I could turn over the same soil that my father did
I would anoint the earth with my tears as I
solemnly ate what is is on my plate and cry,
as I will miss him so until the day I die.
